Q: “Can I Mix and Match Products Different Brands?”

Q&A

Think you have to stick to the same skincare line to get the best results? Rachel Lozina, master esthetician and owner of Blue Water Spa says think again.

A: Absolutely! I’ve always mixed and matched my products, and I think it’s the best approach. One line cannot possibly encompass everything one person’s skin needs. Some products may be more water-based, others more emollient, and still others targeted at specific concerns. You really want to cherry-pick what’s best from each company.

That said, not every product plays well together. Some are silicone-based, some are water-based, and some are oil-based. If they’re not compatible, you can end up with a pilled face. I’ve even put on products that felt great initially, only to have them start rolling a couple of hours later. But generally, you can experiment and find combinations that work.

When creating your regimen, I recommend starting with cleansing. Toner is optional, depending on your skin—some can be drying or irritating. In Japan, they have what they call “lotions,” which are hydrating toners. After cleansing (and applying toner if needed), use your thinnest, most targeted products first, such as antioxidant serums, hydration serums, peptides, or growth factors. Then you can layer additional serums as needed. Finish with a moisturizer to seal everything in, and top with sunscreen unless your moisturizer already contains it. I like to mix products in my hand—it’s easier, and your skin absorbs everything.

There are a few ingredient combinations to be aware of. Benzoyl peroxide, for instance, doesn’t work well with retinol. Alpha-hydroxy acids and vitamin A may also interact. Otherwise, most ingredients can be mixed if you pay attention to formulation and texture. The key is picking what’s right for your skin, not rigidly sticking to a single brand.
