Black-Owned Beauty on Long Island
Having worked in women’s magazines for over 20 years, I feel qualified to say that the industry hasn’t always done a good job promoting diversity. I cringe when I think about how many hair or makeup stories I’ve read—or even written—during my magazine days that failed to mention natural, textured hair or deeper skin tones. That wasn’t OK then, and it’s still not OK now.
And if someone still doesn’t quite understand privilege, here’s just one example: You’ve never had the experience of not being represented in a magazine that claims to speak to all women.
Many women’s magazines (the ones that are still around) and websites have made significant progress in recent years, becoming more inclusive across skin tones, hair textures, and cultural backgrounds. But there’s still room for improvement—and I include myself in that.
Since the beginning, my goal for LI Beauty Scene and Pretty Local has been to reflect and celebrate the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Long Island’s beauty scene. I want the readers—and the professionals I feature—to feel seen and represented in my coverage of local beauty, wellness, and fashion.
As one step in that ongoing commitment, I’ve put together a list of Black-owned beauty businesses, from freelance makeup artists to full-service salons. This is just the beginning—more lists and resources are coming. This list will always be a free, evolving resource for readers and business owners.
